Since 1999 more than 2000 brook trout have been gill tagged (monel metal tags attached to the operculum) from the waters of Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. The information gathered from the recapture of tagged trout has enabled researchers to evaluate No-Kill Trout Sportfishing (Peskowesk Brook), Brook Trout Spawning Numbers (Peskowesk Brook and Rogers Brook), augment a Creel Census (Eel Weir), supplement a Brook Trout Telemetry Study (Mill Falls along with providing a data base of brook trout movements and growth.

RELEVANT TELEMETRY REPORT DATA

Personal Observations Italicized

Movements

Daily brook trout movement patterns changed seasonally and varied from 100 meters to 13 km over a 24 hour period.

From our observations it would appear brook trout travel little, if any, in the hours of darkness.

Daily travel distances of 4 km to 9 km were not uncommon. Also documented a 11 km movement in 21 hours (trout # 14) and a 6.5 km movement in 5.5 hours (trout # 15).

In the spring as early as April they began moving around the lake or into streams: some individuals made long distance journeys of up to 11 km in three days. (Trout # 2). By the first of May most trout where feeding in riffles and runs in the rivers or along the shore of the lake.

When water temperature approached 20C, they moved quickly to deeper water in the lake or to ground water springs in the rivers covering as much as 13 km in one day. (Trout # 7)

Trout # 2 and trout # 15 both traveled 15 km or more up Little River to find summer refuge, however, we can only verify it happened within a week but in all probability was within a couple of days.

Trout # 2 moved out of Keji Lake and up West River in the early spring of 2006

Trout # 3 moved out of Keji Lake and up West River at the end of June (2005) and apparently by choice, settled in the Stump Pool (known summer refuge) for the summer and early fall.

Trout # 12 on the other hand, didn’t move into the Stump Pool on West River until the middle of August (2006). This move apparently necessitated by the lack of oxygen in the Keji Lake thermocline.

This same lack of oxygen may have prompted trout # 10 and trout #14 to move up the Mersey River 38 km and 25 km respectively to find summer refuge

Trout moved as much as 15 km to spawning areas in the rivers during the fall.

Trout # 4 and trout # 7 both came up the Mersey River in October with the river a raging torrent.

Trout # 4 came up river 10 km to Mill Falls from the 12th to 16th of October. Rested four days below the falls, ascended the falls sometime after 11am on the 20th and was at the mouth of Baxter’s Meadow Brook on the 21st .

Trout # 7 moved up river 8 km on the 11th , ascended Mill Falls and moved another 3 km up river on the 12th and was up river another 2 km on the 14th .

Dates and distances of movements to wintering sites.

Trout # 4 was gone from Baxter’s Brook on November 18th and was located back in Keji Lake in the southern cove of Big Muise Island on the 19th - a distance of 17 km.

Trout # 7 was 2 km above Maitland Bridge on November 11th . On November 13th it was on the west side of Indian Point some 15 km from the November 11th location. On the 15th was 2.5 km to the north in Atkin’s Meadow Brook and on the 19th was in Minards Bay (where it spent the winter) 7 km to the south. A known travel distance of 24.5 km since spawning.

Additional travel data.

Six of the radioed fish traveled up the Mersey River out of the park to the north. Trout # 1, # 6, #10 and # 14 apparently seeking summer and fall refuge while the movements of trout # 4 and # 7 would indicate the spawning run.

Two gill-tagged brook trout were recaptured in the Mersey River north of the park as well. # 716 was 8 km and # F63 was 13 km above the release site at time of recapture.

Three of the radioed fish journeyed to Little River. Trout # 2 and # 15 to spend the summer and fall while trout # 4 visited the Stag Neck Pool for two weeks before heading up the Mersey River to spawn.

Gill-tag recapture records also point to a definite link between Little River (Still Brook) and Mill Falls. Trout # 524 tagged May 22, 2003 at Mill Falls was recaptured May 10, 2004 at Big Dam Lake. Trout # K68 tagged May 11, 2005 at Still Brook was recaptured 36 days later (June 16, 2005) at Mill Falls (GIS analysis 27 km). Trout # 901 tagged May 8, 2008 at Still Brook was recaptured May 28, 2009 at Mill Falls (GIS analysis 27 km).

Four of the radioed fish spent time in Minards Bay. Trout # 3 spent less than a week in the fall of 2005 and trout # 18 spent some time in early spring 2007. Trout # 7 spent the winter of 2005/2006 in Minards Bay and succumbed to otter predation there in May 2006. Trout # 19 spent the winter of 2006/2007 in Minards Bay and also succumbed to otter predation there in early spring 2007.

A five year old brook trout gill-tagged (# 331) October 7, 2002 above Mill Falls was recaptured June 9, 2003 in Minards Bay.

Four of the radioed trout spent time in the vicinity of Dark and Freeman Islands. Trout # 3, Trout # 18 and Trout # 21 spent a considerable amount of time there through late fall into spring. Trout # 12 also spent some time there in late fall 2006.

It is interesting to note that six of the radioed fish; trout # 2, trout # 3, trout # 4, trout # 12, trout #19 and trout # 21 all visited a location near Haystack Rock for a short period of time in their travels.

Trout # 12 also spent a week in Loon Lake in December 2006.

Trout # 14 at one time was approximately 15 km above the Mill Falls release site and was recaptured 20 km below the release site.

Two of the radioed trout #10 and #22 spent time in Grafton Lake. #10 spent three weeks in May/June of 2006 and #22 spent the winter of 2006/2007.

Numerous brook trout gill tagged at Peskowesk Brook in the month of May were recaptured in subsequent years from the same section of brook in which they were tagged. #PB10 and #984 were recaptured three years concurrently (see Brook Trout Growth section). Knowing from water chemistry analysis that Peskowesk Brook is not a summer refuge for brook trout this annual return would appear to be a feeding migration.

Another record of homing to feeding locations is gill tagged Trout # 286. Tagged May 17, 2003 above the Eel Weir bridge. Recaptured April 29, 2004 at Channel Lake 12.5 km away. Recaptured May 19, 2004 above the Eel Weir bridge from the exact same feeding lie where it had been caught and tagged 367 days earlier.

The table on the following page lists water temperatures and water levels from the Mill Falls monitoring site on the Mersey River April thru October for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. It is interesting to note the higher water levels of October 2005 and June/July 2006 didn’t appear to have any significant influence on water temperature averages.

BROOK TROUT GROWTH RECORDS

                                                                                 2000 - 2009

Kejimkujik National Park & National Historic Site

During the brook trout population study in the Fly Fishing Only, Catch and Release Area of Peskowesk Brook, numerous brook trout were captured more than once. These recaptures, having all been previously tagged with monel metat tags attached to the operculum, were readily identifiable.

Previous studies done under controlled laboratory conditions, have shown that brook trout will consume as much as 50% of their body weight and gain as much as 16% of their initial body weight per week when water temperature is 13c and food is readily available.

The number of same year recaptures showing up on Peskowesk Brook presented an opportunity for the author to collect growth data under natural conditions. The initial results were so interesting that growth information was recorded whenever possible in successive studies.

The trout were all measured (fork length) in the newly designed Baird and Corbett measuring tubes (pictured elsewhere in this report). These tubes enable technicians to get fast and accurate measurements without causing any undue stress or injury to fish.

All recaptures were re-measured and where possible, re-weighed regardless of the time frame since last capture resulting in 211 valid* growth records to date.

* Note: Recaptures not measured by the author are recorded as"angler measured" in this report. Although all "angler measured" recaptures recorded were double checked for authenticity, it was with the full realization that most anglers measure total length rather than fork length and a quick measurement is definitely not as accurate as the measuring tubes.

Available data would indicate brook trout start foraging for food shortly after ice-out and compile their most growth early in the season. It also appears an increase in length precedes a gain in weight.

Age statistics show park brook trout grow an average of 6.3 cm between their first and second years, 4.0 cm between their second and third years, 3.7 cm between their third and four years, 4.4 cm between their four and fifth years, and should they live, 2.5 cm between their fifth and sixth years. In years when sustained spring water levels extend this ravenous brook trout feeding period, growth records indicate trout of all ages take full advantage of this opportunity and growth will exceed the yearly average. The reverse is true for lean years.

Data from brook trout at Peskowesk Brook over a six year periodhow a fairly consistentpattern of age to weight to length pattern. The older the fish the higher the ratio of unit weight to

unit length. Conversely, the younger the fish the lower the ratio of unit weight to unit length.

Using millimeters as the unit length and grams as the unit weight, the 6+ trout from Peskowesk Brook average 1.8 grams for every millimeter of length, while the 1+ fish average less than .5 grams per millimeter of length. The averages for the other age groups are as follows:

5+ fish: 1.65 grams per mm

4+ fish: 1.25 grams per mm

3+ fish .94 grams per mm

2+ fish .63 grams per mm

The unit weight to unit length ratio data from 1540 brook trout records between 1994 and 2004 in Kejimkujik National Park and Nation Historic site show this Peskowesk formula to be fairly consistent with all upper Mersey River trout. Thus it can be used to determine age and/or weight and be considered reasonably accurate when only the length of the fish is known. This age versus length relationship is the most accurate during the month of September. There are certainly cases of overlap in the month of May where a 3+ fish, for example, will be close to the average length of a 4+ fish. In such cases the grams per mm ratio will be the determining factor. From all appearances 3+ Brook trout in the Upper Mersey River System do not reach the grams per mm ratio of 4+ fish during their third year.

The following table shows average length, weight and grams per millimeter for each age class of Upper Mersey River Watershed brook trout. It will be noted that the four and five year age classes of Peskowesk Brook trout have a slightly higher grams per mm ratio than the over all average.

Growth data of interest not mentioned elsewhere in this report show that the fifteen (15) 5+ brook trout recorded from the 2002 - 2004 Eel Weir census averaged 1.7 cm longer in length than the eleven (11) 5+ brook trout recorded from the 1994 - 1996 Eel Weir census.
